It's quite surprising how much American TV there is here in Argentina....I even caught my all-time-fave-show "Saturday Night Live" last night (and last year's awesome "D*ck In a Box" song!)
The media studies major and television fanatic in me is pleased my apartment has a TV equipped with 70 channels. Most of the channels are Argentine...a lot of news programs, etc. But I'm surprised at how many American TV shows and movies they air. "The Simpsons" is extremely popular here, and it's dubbed into Spanish which is really good for me since I know "The Simpsons" like the back of my hand. So I can thank Homer and Bart for improving my Spanish! The other American shows and movies have Spanish subtitles instead of dubbing, which is also educational at times, and also relieving; sometimes all I want to do is zone out and watch some good-old U.S. of A. shows without using my brain to translate. I've been watching everything from "Three and a Half Men" (my Peruvian roommate loves this) to "Grey's Anatomy" to "7th Heaven" to even "The Office" and "30 Rock" (a season or two behind, sadly). Not only is it awesome to watch these shows for pleasure, it's also really neat to watch them from a different angle, a different viewpoint. I've realized that most of the funny jokes on "SNL" or "30 Rock" must be hard to cross cultures, and I've noticed how subtitles skirt some of the strictly American jokes. It's interesting. Hey, who said TV can't be educational!
